Happy Holidays

As we approach Christmas and the end of 2011 I would like to dedicate this post to my readers and wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy new year.  I would particularly like to say a thankyou to those of you who regularly follow my blog or who follow me on twitter.  Without your comments this blog would not exist and I would not have the opportunity of meeting so many lovely people.

When I first started blogging it was mainly a way for me to come to terms with  the difficulties that my son was experiencing.  At that time my son was recovering from anxiety which had been so severe that he hadn’t been able to leave the house or attend his mainstream school.  Consequently we fought a long and hard battle to help our son recover and get him into his current special school which teaches autistic children.  That battle left me emotionally exhausted and angry that families like mine were not being listened to and that children like my son were not getting the right support early enough.  As a result, I started to blog myself out of misery.  It sounds corny to say that blogging is therapy but for me it really was.  Writing has proved to be a creative outlet and a chance for me to have a voice as a mother and a parent of two autistic children.

A year later, whilst I continue to face many challenges, not least my son’s latest bout of school refusal, I feel fortunate to have found an online community and the opportunity to talk with others in similar situations.  It’s so reassuring to know that I’m not alone in the challenges I face as a mother of two autistic children.  Above all, I feel grateful to have an opportunity to contribute to raising awareness of autism and aspergers and no matter how small my contribution, I hope to continue with this in 2012.

Once again, wishing you all a happy holiday.
